Even without any formal fashion education, Jerell's sensitivity to style and color was soon recognized with his participation in Project Runway's fifth season. His distinct ability to harmonize several seemingly discongruent elements propelled him successfully to New York and Los Angeles Fashion Week. For Project White T-Shirt, Jerell framed a negative space in the shape of a t-shirt and wrapped the positive space in t-shirt jersey. In this way, Jerell sought to discuss the idea of a white t-shirt as art, with the white t-shirt itself removed and the mode of expression between art and fashion flipped.
