Concept

Fashion is an evolution: from animal skin to artificial cotton to synthetic fiber, from a necessity to an elitist symbol, to a way of self-expression. For decades, a T-shirt has been a functional article that covers the torso. But how will it evolve? What will the process of evolution create? Project White T-Shirt challenges dominant notions of fashion and draws the connection between different forms of art. Its goal is to expand possibilities and creativity through the most basic article of clothing: the white T-shirt.

This is not a T-shirt design contest. Rather, Project White T-Shirt aims to transform a plain white T-shirt into something more. The designer can turn the shirt into furniture, equipment, electronics, a bicycle—-anything they want, however they want. They will transform and redefine the definition of the T-shirt as we’ve understood it for so many decades.

We often wonder, with so many innovators in the fashion industry, why do only a few challenge the fundamental forms of fashion? Why can’t fashion transcend the limits of clothing as form, and become architecture, music, object, and so many other boundless forms? It’s time to turn our curiosity into action and begin our fashion (R)evolution. Let’s start with the classic white T-shirt!

Charity Auction: We will auction off the pieces after the exhibition. All proceeds will be donated to Designers Against Aids.

Designers Against AIDS

Non-profit organization ‘Beauty Without Irony’ has launched the international project ‘Designers Against AIDS’ (DAA) in 2004 in order to raise AIDS awareness in the international media and towards the general public, more specifically towards young people in the industrialised countries using elements from pop culture (music, fashion, design, arts, sports, film, celebrities, etc).

The main objective of Designers against AIDS is to raise awareness and to get the subject of HIV/AIDS back into the media all over the world, as lately it has become a forgotten disease, especially in the western world. Our messages are: ‘Prevention is the only cure for HIV/AIDS‘ (protect yourself and your partner) and ‘Know your status’ (get tested). Furthermore we fight for the acceptance of and equal rights for seropositive people.
